The only football I will watch and understand is fútbol. And even then I’m not a big fan of any sport and have only been to maybe 2 or 3 professional games in my life, mostly when I was dating the Mr. You know, just to show that I was interested (hey, we ALL do it!)
He’s a Green Bay Packers supporter being from Wisconsin and all. But our 6 1/2 year stint in the UK left him out of touch with the NFL and he became a big footie fan (soccer) and doesn’t mind a bit of cricket here and there. It’s actually really funny, because his family, especially his mom is appalled. Ha!
This weekend, I had an amazing opportunity thanks to Klout and the Women of Washington Redskins Club (WOW) to not only attend a Washington Redskins vs Buffalo Bills game but GO ON THE FIELD to cheer on the players as they ran in. WOW, WOW, WOW! For a total and absolute (American) football newbie this was just unreal! Also included was access to the WOW Pre-Game Event with open wine bar and food. I know, sweeeeet!
OF COURSE I thought of what I’d wear. I mostly wear loose skirts and dresses but didn’t want to for a game. I ended up with my trusty pair of maternity turned shapewear cobalt jeans, printed flats, a dressier pink blouse from Target and a blue sash instead of a belt to add a bit of glam to the day — besides we were sort of VIP!
However, the Mr. informed me there was a no handbag/purse policy so I would have to carry only my phone and ID.
I couldn’t believe it, I mean, a girl without her bag is just….NOT RIGHT. However, I didn’t want to risk them making me throw my bag away (which they were doing) so instead I wore my handbag necklace. That’s right, a necklace with a handbag. And guess what, the security guard actually noticed it and made everyone come over to look at it, saying “Alright, I’ll let you in with that!”
At the pre-game event, I noticed that other ladies were dressed up so I wasn’t the only one bringing some style to the game and I had a chance to meet fellow fashion blogger Sara of Style for the Seasons who was wearing a very fancy and fitted Redskins jersey. She looked like a girl in it — I’d never seen women’s gear before and she looked super cute.
I thought that was going to be it — good food and drinks, good conversation, hitting the field, then watching the game. But then I was asked to meet Tanya Snyder. I gave the PR woman a blank stare as she asked me to come over to talk to her — I said “Who is she?” and she said “That’s Daniel Snyder’s wife — he’s the owner of the Redskins.”
She looked absolutely amazing and she was wearing a very sexy Redskins top — I wasn’t expecting so much glamour in a football stadium!
I couldn’t talk football with her but we certainly could talk motherhood, makeup and fashion. We had an impromptu interview and chatted casually — in December 2012 she, along with actress Holly Robinson Peete launched the Redskins Style Lounge which is where all of the fashionable gear for women is sold. Thanks to her, she has been working on giving something back to the ladies of the Redskins and ensuring that we feel loved and included in the game as much as the boys — and of course look cute supporting our local team.
As you can image, I instantly liked her.
After that, I put on my new Ladies of Washington Redskins t-shirt and added the sash to give is some pizzazz and we made our way down to the field where we cheered on the players as they came on the field (another surreal moment) then back to our seats in the FRONT ROW to watch the game. The Mr. was loving life that day and having the cheerleaders shake their pom-poms and bon bons right in front of us certainly kept him beyond entertained.
I see now why women enjoy the game even if they don’t totally get it — the atmosphere is energizing and the addition of the Style Lounge and having something for the girls to wear and look and feel good is brilliant — they have everything from handbags, bracelets, necklaces, earrings and fitted tees and sweatshirts.
Are you a women who loves football? Does your team have stylish women’s gear?
