A few weeks ago I had my friend and health coach Jennifer of Luminous Wellness over at my place and we spent an afternoon making green smoothies and she taught me how to pack in some serious nutrition into my day and kick my Coke Zero for breakfast habit. I know, I know, but don’t judge me!
While we were busy in the kitchen, M who is 4 1/2 came around and wanted in on the smoothie making action. He is actually a good eater, loves his veggies and will ask for an apple on his own (I am patting myself on the back as I type.)
I tend to give him healthy snacks and I always water down his orange and apple juice. I found out the Mr. doesn’t which didn’t make me very happy (I will have to have a talk with him later!)
However, M doesn’t even question me watering down his drinks because I’ve been doing it for so long and I do the same for myself. But I find that it’s much more difficult to find kids box drinks that don’t contain buckets of sugar.
Vita Coco Kids sent us a box of their newest drinks which contain only 8 grams of sugar per 6 fl. oz and only 35 calories each. That’s about half the sugar of most other kids drinks and no nasties or artificial sweeteners. From the makers of Vita Coco, the well-know coconut water brand, the drinks are made for children ages 2-8.
We pretty much tore into the box which included six drinks — Apple Island, Paradise Punch and Very Cherry Beach. Like everything my babies eat, I have to try it too and when he wasn’t looking I snuck one for myself. We are so used to tasting super sweet drinks that this almost seemed bland, but in fact it had a subtle naturally sweet fruit taste with a touch of coconut. I wanted more but he knows how to count now so I can’t fool him.
All that said and done, the packaging is super sweet and I’m digging the eco-friendly/socially responsible form of packaging based on the use of wood fiber. It’s pretty darn cool.
Now with the school year starting up again these drinks are idea for school lunches — find them at Target or online at Amazon.
