Last week, the Alexandria Convention & Visitors Association (ACVA) held it’s annual meeting and launch of their new brand “Extraordinary Alexandria” at the Old Town Theater on King Street.
It was a cool and very autumn feeling day (sorry, I say autumn, too many years in the UK!) despite being a few days away from the official start of this new season. It was the ideal night to wear a “transitional” outfit — a little bit of late summer with a touch of fall. I dug out a black dress with small flower print that I’ve had since my London days, added a pair of ShaToBu shapewear tights and that’s where I got stuck.
I wasn’t sure what shoes to wear. I needed heels, but didn’t want to look too work like and so the search began. I had done a bit of sorting through my closet a few weeks ago and have purged a ton of stuff — mostly to donate and had kept only the items I would wear. I did a quick scan and a BOOM — saw a pair of red peeptoe low heeled tie shoes from Nine West. They were perfect!
My sister came over a few minutes later to babysit and what do you know, she had on the same shoes and was wearing tights. I gasped. She looked… ADORABLE!
I wasn’t planning on wearing stockings or tights (or whatever they are called!) with these, but the peeptoe/tights look just looked effortless and just uber glam.
It turned my outfit from BLAH to HOORAH in seconds and from summer to fall in another instant.
Whoever said you can’t wear tights/stockings with peeptoes or sandals is WRONG! It’s a matter of finding the right shoes and playing around with different looks.
To hide the hips and the fact that the dress is still a bit snug in the middle clinging more than I’d like, I added my trusty and classic CAbi Trench coat.
EVERYONE needs a good trench. It dresses up any outfit AND hides the extra lumps and bumps. Wear open and loose to give you a classic and clean look.
To complete the look, I added a pair of chandelier Stella & Dot Valentina Earrings in gold and skipped on the statement necklace opting for a simple On the Mark Stella & Dot delicate necklace instead. I preferred the attention to be on the earrings!
So there you have it — a simple and easy to wear transitional outfit for the beginning of fall. All straight from my closet, nothing new, just restyled for this occasion.
