Capes and wraps are hot for this fall and winter and I personally love that it is stylish AND it covers up my rollitos — it’s ideal for those fat days, but keeps you looking oh so chic.
With that in mind, I put together 4 ways to wear a cape:
1. Wear open to show off your outfit. Make sure to accessorize with a necklace or belt.
2. The traditional wrap never gets old — it’s super classic! Take one end and wear over one shoulder.
3. Belt it! Take a belt, any belt and cinch the waist for a more “I’m going out so watch out” look. Add a necklace and BOOM, you are good to go.
4. Half cape, half wrap. Making sure the back is loose, belt the cape then take one end and arrange over one shoulder.
I have made a style faux pas by judging before trying on or experiencing an item of clothing or brand — but I have been proven oh so wrong by a local boutique.
Periwinkle, a locally owned shop in Alexandria, Virginia and part of the Old Town Boutique District has in one day made it back on my places to shop list. Without ever stepping into the boutique, I was quick to categorize it as an old lady (a la Chico’s style) store. Turns out, it is actually, well, my style! It is a mix of classic looks with bold colors and patterns. Sure, grannies can shop here, but as it turns out, so can I!
Established in 2005, owner Elizabeth Mason took her love of fashion and opened a one stop shopping destination for the active woman — including busy mamas (ME!) and the professional working woman. In 2010 she opened up a second location in Shirlington, Virginia.
Celebrating their 8th year, the boutique had an anniversary party and unveiling of their new look (although, I wouldn’t have noticed since I’d never been in there!) for media.
The houndstooth cape was soft, cozy and perfect for me! I love ponchos, wraps and oversized knits for fall, so there was an instant connection. But it didn’t end there — the houndstooth cape had so much style potential. I was wearing a simple black dress with a double belt, and a necklace and the houndstooth cape was a welcomed addition.
Because of it’s versatility, another look that pops to mind (which is more in line with us mamas) is the leggings, suede booties and a comfy long sleeved tee. Add a pair of dark sunglasses, a necklace and belt and…watch out mama is coming for you!
Aside from having a special “moment” with this houndstooth cape, I scoped out what the other guests were wearing and came across some very stylish women— they all make me want to go shopping!
Angela of Northern Virginia Magazine was wearing a super cute printed skirt with a knitted top and the Stella & Dot Rebel Pendant. Michelle of Shop Around Blog had the rocker chick look going on with a snake print dress, mesh-like booties and a cropped leather jacket — all of which were calling my name! Angelica of Clarendon Moms wore a lovely summer print dress which I must say, she looked gorgeous in.

Fellow style mavens and Alexandria blogging duo Jamie and Sally of The Style Lobby both looked crisp and classic in fitted jeans, a black top with delicate leather trim and a black and white printed top.
What can I say, I enjoy seeing what others are wearing, how they are styling pieces and how they make it work for their body type. Going back to fall fashion, I am heading back tomorrow to check out more styles and of course, picking up my cape! For all you locals, Periwinkle is offering10% off your total purchase for the rest of the month.
