One question I get often from friends and readers is “Superga or Converse?”
Being a wearer of many pairs of Converse since my teens and currently the owner of 4 pair of Superga sneakers, I can give you the low down on each.
However, I will tell you now, my final say is: Superga all the way.
Never heard of them? Then allow me to break it down for you: Superga sneakers are the incredibly more stylish and effortlessly classy European cousin of Keds and Converse — or better known as the People’s Shoes of Italy. I personally fell madly in love when I saw a very colorful display at a local shoe store and then realized they were not the “disposable” kind of footwear.
The color, texture and pattern options are endless. Compared to the Converse, Superga far exceed Chuck Taylors in terms of quality, comfort, longevity and style. The durable and well-made canvas, sole and lining provide complete coverage on your feet, warmth and durability.
Available as slip-ons and high-tops
Best way to wash Supergas: In a pillow case, 30 degree cool wash and powder detergent (not liquid), leave laces on so you don’t lose the shape of the shoe and hang to dry naturally, not on a radiator.
Price: $65 – $85
Converse sneakers are an American classic. They are trendy and edgy, but anyone who has worn a pair know how uncomfortable they are, how long the the break-in period is and the canvas they are made with provide ZERO protection from the cold or rain.
I started wearing Converse again after becoming a parent because I wanted stylish sneakers for everyday. My only option was Converse despite knowing they were not good for my feet. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to deal with wet socks, chafing and blisters when wearing them. Quality, comfort and longevity are poor.
Available in high-tops
Best way to wash Converse: In a pillow case or mesh bag, delicate cycle and cool water. Do not put in dryer.
Price: $45 – $55
As I said in the beginning I have ended my relationship with Converse and wear only Superga. Price wise it isn’t a big stretch — for $20 more you get a pair of shoes of a better quality, longer durability and in my opinion much more stylish.
What are your thoughts — Superga or Converse?
