People always say to me that they can’t wear certain colors or styles because of their weight or shape.
After a comment like that I usually say “did you try it on?” (if we are talking specific clothing). That is usually followed by a long silence and then a very defensive, “No. But I just know” response.
Ummmmm, no you don’t. You didn’t try it on so you can’t KNOW.
I have a rule — I try it on. I give things a chance. Believe me, I used to look at things and say ‘NO WAY. NEVER. NUNCA.” But guess what, I ended up more frustrated searching for my idea of the perfect shirt or jeans, when I could have found it sooner if I had JUST TRIED IT ON. As an adult I learned to give things a try and because of that I have been able to expand my wardrobe, nurture my style and keep an open mind.
Case in point — jeggings and over the knee boots. I mean, I would have NEVER. Take a look at a simple and classic outfit idea for this fall/winter season.
Let’s start with the jeggings (jeans + leggings). The name is horrid, but if you get past that you can style them to look more like super skinny stretch jeans or trousers — that’s how I think of them.
A few weeks ago I took a shopping trip to H&M and found these burgundy ones for $17. For starters the price is super nice — the color is spot on for the fall/winter aaaaaaaaaaand, they sit high on my waist controlling the muffin top and accentuating my curves in all the right ways. Like my mamá says, “gordita pero bonita” (curvy/chubby but pretty).
Next the boots. I have to admit, I was super self conscious about wearing them over the knee. I bought these soft leather pair last year at T.J. Maxx but always folded them over — you know, Puss in Boots style. I couldn’t bring myself to wear them above the knee. Until now!
I finally took my own style advice and said to myself “no seas tonta, TRY it” (“don’t be silly.” And YES, I speak to myself in Spanish!) End result: a clean, comfortable (very important for mamas) and polished autumnal look that can take me from day to night.
Plaid is rad. No really, I love plaid and dressing up the classic look with just the right amount of chicness. My favorite way to wear it is in a blazer form — in fact I have an addiction to blazers. I feel secure with one on and they can be ideal to hide chunky arms, wide hips or unflattering trousers. I have too many to count — but one of my all time favorites was given to me by my friend and CAbi Stylist Susan Rigger.
Coincidently the blazer is called “The Happy Blazer” and it must be magic, because I feel FELIZ when I wear it. The plaid is not too overbearing and I like the preppy and classic look with just the right amount of femininity.
To complete my look, I added wine colored lips, soft curls styled at Salon 46 during their one year anniversary party, a Lilith Fringe Stella & Dot necklace and a white blouse off of the clearance rack at H&M ($5….).
I haven’t done a proper style post in a while, but I absolutely love doing them. You know why? Because I want to show that you CAN try different styles and inspire you to get out there and TRY IT ON! Us mamas have to help each other out.
What have you taken a chance on recently?
