Leather pants. I repeat, LEATHER PANTS — on ME! And may I add that I can’t say the word pants without giggling. Blame it on my 6 1/2 years of living in the UK. In case you don’t know, pants across the pond means underwear…so I got used to saying trousers. But since I’m back in the US of A, I’ll go with pants (insert laughter here).
Anyway, back to the Karen Kane (faux) stretch leather pants I’m wearing. Never did I ever think I could wear those, but what do you know, I tried it and it worked! So where does that leave you?
No worries, I’ve got you!
Here’s a little leather pants pep talk to get YOU started on your quest to find the perfect pair to wear this winter:
1. First, get past the idea that you can’t wear them. Remember, if you don’t give it a try you will never know. There are all sorts of styles and fits. TRY IT ON!
2. Then scope out different styles to find your proper fit and style — jeggings, skinny fit, trousers, bootleg, etc. Remember, you can style them like any other black pair of pants which means you can dress up for the office with pumps and a blazer, or dress down with a boyfriend cardigan and suede booties.
3. Once you have an idea of what looks good on you, check to see that the leather pants are lined on the inside so that you don’t FREEZE this winter (leggings don’t count in this case). The pair I was gifted have a light lining and it also keep from sticking to your legs (remember that episode of Friends when Ross gets stuck in his leather pants??!) yeah, we don’t want that to happen.
4. Lastly, feel confident in what you are wearing! I was a bit scared at first, but I thought, “WHY? Why am I nervous about going out in these?” And the answer was because it was something so new to me — unknown. But I quickly assessed that: they looked good, they were a good fit and there was no reason I couldn’t rock them.
Then Redbook Magazine came ‘a knockin’. They asked me to photograph one of my favorite accessories for an upcoming feature, so I styled my Stella & Dot Pegasus Necklace with a white chiffon blouse and plaid jacket from H&M, grey suede booties I had bought at Target for $9 and a Gap cream knit hat.
OF COURSE it was the perfect chance to debut my leather pants. I finished off the look with a dab of Boots No 7 red lipstick, obviously! Thanks to my friend and brilliant photographer Rashmi of Rashmi Pappu Photography for the snaps and for making sure to get the perfect shots!
Now what are you waiting for? Get out there and at the very least try on a pair of leather pants. You just may be surprised!
