Hollywood came to Old Town Alexandria this past week for the 8th Annual GI Film Festival — it’s known as the Sundance Film Festival for the Troops.
As part of my work with Visit Alexandria, I along with colleagues hit the red carpet to snap some pictures and do interviews. Naturally I couldn’t rock up in jeans…well, I could have, but it wouldn’t have looked professional.
We were able to meet and talk with David Arquette, we got great photos with Gary Sinise as seen here and on Saturday we saw Adam Driver, actor and former Marine on the red carpet and then the beautiful Michelle Monaghan spoke and took a selfie with us!
Despite all of the excitement, I was feeling terrible, it was a bad day on the anxiety front. As you may know, I’m in the midst of nasty battle with depression and anxiety and that day I had been home in bed fighting off anxiety pangs and vertigo. It wasn’t a pretty site.
It was a huge effort to get made up and dressed but I did it. I didn’t know what to wear and because everything is tighter on me with my recent surge in weight, it made me more anxious. Eventually I opted for a blue stretch dress and red patent pumps.
I had my husband drive me because I didn’t feel I could. Obviously once I was there being distracted helped a bit, but the vertigo was getting worse and when you are wearing heels on brick sidewalks…it’s not a good mix. I didn’t get pictures of what I wore, I was just so out of it and wanted to get home.
I did smile and push through, but the second I walked out of the theater to catch a cab, the vertigo and anxiety got more intense — here’s a recap of how I was feeling and how healing doesn’t happen overnight. If any of you are going through this, I hope that you too are getting help and have the support you need.
