The Capital Wheel at National Harbor is now a new attraction in the Washington, D.C area. Its been a topic of discussion and there is a love it or loathe it feeling amongst locals. I personally feel it goes with the essence of National Harbor which appeals to visitors and locals alike.
I was invited to the media preview and had a beautiful night time ride with views over the Potomac River. My only other experience has been the London Eye, which is at a completely different level so it is not fair to compare the two
For what it is, the Capital Wheel offers a lovely view of Alexandria, the Capitol building and the Washington Monument. I’ve heard critics say “you can’t see anything” and my response to that is “this isn’t NYC, we live in D.C. — there are no skyscrapers and all building are low.”
Wait until you have family or friends in from out of town, have brunch in Old Town Alexandria, then take the Potomac River Boat Company water taxi from the Alexandria waterfront to National Harbor, ride the Capital Wheel and then cruise back across the Potomac. You will really impress your guests with your tour guide skills! (and they may even pay for your ticket)
