Wearing My Swimsuit (cellulite and all) and Why You Should Too

Share Button

*I wrote this last year, but everything is relevant today and how I’m still feeling. Either way, let’s get out there mamas and ENJOY our summer!*

Recently I came across a blog post on Facebook were a mom wrote about putting on her swimsuit, pushing aside her insecurities, coming out from under the sun umbrella and taking off the coverup to… get this… ENJOY playing with her children in the water! So simple, yet something many of us, myself included don’t do.

Look, the fact is I’ve had better years and probably so have you — for me this summer I am NOT in good form. But that does not give me the right to sulk and deprive my children of a few months of pure joy and excitement at the pool or at the beach. It is my responsibility as a parent to lead by example and SHOW them a good time and create happy and healthy memories. I don’t want to be remembered as hiding away every summer.

This weekend was my 17 month old daughter’s first time at the beach— a truly precious moment and I was NOT about to spend it worrying about my stomach rolls and cellulite.

I thought, “F – it. I know I’m gordita, but I have a cute swimsuit and really, who cares?”

Yes —  I’m 30 lbs. from my normal weight.

Yes — I’m bottom heavy and most of my weight is on my hips and thighs.

Yes — I have cellulite. A lot of it.

Yes — I’m working on it, but everything works slower now (yikes!)

However in the mean time, I WILL enjoy pool and beach time with my children IN the water because I love it (I really do!) and so do they. Maybe next year I’ll be in better form, who knows. But for now, it is what it is.

Taking these pictures was not easy. I repeat, NOT EASY. I have never, ever, ever taken pictures of me in a swimsuit unless I looked really, really good and that was a while back.

But I had made the decision to just let go of my insecurities as well as get others do to it too. In order to to that, I had to have proof; evidence to back up my claims.

So here I am, all of me — hips, thighs and cellulite. Please be kind — I’m a real mama dealing with real life including depression and anxiety. If seeing these pictures gets at least ONE of you to wear your swimsuit care-free then I’ve accomplished what I set out to do. Even my husband commented on how happy he was to see me playing with the kids and enjoying myself.

Yes — I care about how I look, but being smart and confident enough to know that working with what you have it what truly counts. Besides, we are grown women who should be secure enough with ourselves to not run and hide when we aren’t perfect looking.

Please, do yourself and your family a massive favor, have an amazing summer and remember, just get out there…your kids will thank you for it later and they won’t care what you looked like.

They will only remember the smiles, laughter and the splashing good time they had with you, their beautiful and fun mama!

We are always our own worst critics. The swimsuit is adorable, and you look great in it. Hello, you’re a NORMAL woman!

    • http://www.verybusymamablog.com/ María José Ovalle

Thanks Amy! I agree, we are our own worst critics. I am confident with other things in my life, but act like a scared child when it comes to swimsuits. I still keep working on my eating and working out each day, but in the meantime I have to enjoy summer as if no one is watching :)

  • http://www.beingmrsbeer.com/ Jess Beer

So proud of you! It’s so much more important to enjoy your kids! I LOVE your suit – looks great on you! I’m 48 pounds above my goal weight, but I’m workin on it every day, and here’s hoping next year I feel even better. Not letting it stop me from playing with my little one in the pool though!

    • http://www.verybusymamablog.com/ María José Ovalle

Thank you Jess! Yes, I’m still working on it everyday too, but in the meantime…IT’S SUMMER and we just have to enjoy it! I know I will regret to playing with my kids because I regret not doing it last year. And yes, let’s make next year a good one!

Well I’m proud of you – and you KNOW I think you’re beautiful any day of the week. I’m going on holiday next week and I’ll take some photos and share them too. Big kisses (besos!) from back in England. xxxx

Rachael, I still remember seeing your marathon story and how encouraging and amazing that was for me to read, especially after having my son. To think that was years ago! Thank you so much for your comment and kind words — I look forward to seeing your beautiful face on holiday and please do share your photos! xoxo

  • Clarendon Moms

You look great Maria! I LOVE this swimsuit! Thanks for sharing this post! Thanks to all your encouragement and your fashion advice showing your readers how to dress for their body types, I finally found a bathing suit I can wear this summer. As much as I’ve beat myself up since having my two kids (ages 4 & 6), I’m tired of killing myself in the gym and kitchen to try to get that body I had ten years ago and 40 pounds ago. But, with the right swimwear, I know I can look ten pounds thinner and feel a few years younger. Cheers to our self-acceptance and for swimming with our kids on the beach. After all, they have always known us in our current bodies. They have no idea what we used to look like. LOL. Let’s embrace our bodies this summer, bathing suit and all! Xoxo…

    • http://www.verybusymamablog.com/ María José Ovalle

LOVE YOU! and You know you look fabulous. Like you said, they don’t know what you used to look like, hell, even I don’t know what you used to look like. All I know is what I see now. and I’m looking and I’m liking! :) We can’t beat ourselves up. We can and should work to stay fit and healthy, but this summer, this is what I’ve got to work with!

  • Andrea Summers

Thank you momma! I think I went a bit bonkers there, but it feels good to let loose. Besides, seeing it makes me want to work out harder!

Love it, you are awesome and your kids will forever thank you for this!

    • http://www.verybusymamablog.com/ María José Ovalle

Thanks Ellen! My husband couldn’t believe I let him take a full body picture of me in a bathing suit, but its over! besides, it really does give me motivation to keep working hard :)

  • Sandy Woodcock

Great swimsuit, great hat, you are darling, your kids are darling….Fabulous! Please enjoy, stop striving for perfect, strive for happiness, health, joy, none of which come from worrying about what you aren’t, but do come from loving what you are! When you kiddos are grown, as mine are, they will only remember how much fun they had with you at the water.

  • DC Celine

Slacker mama, finally getting around to reading this. The struggle is so real, and I know it must have taken so much for you to take these pictures, let alone share them with us. As a mama who’s tried to get herself – never mind her body – back – and shared along the way, know you WILL have helped even one woman take a step to feel better about herself. What you’re doing is for you, I know, and for your family, but it’s also helping someone out there you’ve likely never met. We’re all in this together, darlin’! Oh, and btw, LOVE the whole look, and you!

  • Maybelline

You’re not alone! I have always been on the chubby side so hiding was always a way of living. Love your swimsuit! Mine is all black but I love the polka dots! super cute!

  • http://www.bubbablueandme.com/ Emma Tustian

Great post, and I love the hat setting off your swimsuit. I have similar pear shaped issues – and with a 3 1/2yo really should have lots my baby weight by now, but have in fact put on more. Disgraceful. But I swim every week with people from work – all slim people, men and women, and that’s helped get over the looking terrible in a swimsuit. Kids just see mum being with them, so IF we ever get on holiday and to the beach or pool, I shall be there with N in my costume.

  • Jan Wright

i wish my middle went in like yours 😉

  • Deborah Cruz

I Love this post and I Love you. You are beautiful, inside and out and I knew that…I saw it the moment I met you. That big beautiful smile and that giant heart of yours and girl, did I mention that you rocked the hell out of everything you wore last week at the conference.
I know everything you say is true and , believe it or not, I DO wear my bathing suit to the pool in our neighborhood and I DO go to the beach with my children, as you said for them. I won’t lie, my suit has a little skirt on it to help hide the cellulite but I go because I need to be the right example for my girls and I don’t want to miss out on their childhood. I know they won’t remember the size of my ass. To them, I am mama and they love me, fat or skinny and so does my husband. But, I can’t lie, it bothers me to not feel good in my clothes. It bothers me a lot. I am working on it. I want to be healthy and not limited in the stuff I can do. I want to be able to run around the yard for hours with them and ride bikes all day. I want to love the skin I am in but I have been battling my body image since I was a child. Seriously, before I was fat, I already thought I was fat. Then I had eating disorders and I was a only 107 lbs and I still thought I was fat. I’ve thought I was fat for so long that I can’t see myself any other way. I am trying. I have come along way. I don’t hate my body. I used to. In my early 30’s, I felt like it completely betrayed me but now I know this body gave me these children and for that, I love it. So now, I need to reconcile myself to changing what I can and accepting what I can’t. I mean , come on, I am old enough to know that I will probably always have cellulite and my 7 stretch marks aren’t going anywhere any time soon but I can lose weight and I can get in shape and that’s what I need to focus on …being healthier.

P.S. I think you look great in your swimsuit. Curvy like Marilyn Monroe!

  • Bethany Magnie

I love this post so so much!! I just had my daughter in January and am far from what I weighed before having her. But I will be donning my swim suit this year as well, proudly! My body made a person, and that’s what it looks like. If that’s not reason to show it off idk what is!

  • bloggingastrid

I’m so proud of you! It’s not just for the children, but you show the world that every body is good as it is. I am overweight too and most of my fat is on my belly. Not nice, but so what? I don’t have kids to use as a motivation to put on my swimsuit, but I do have a love of swimming and playing in the water!

  • http://www.amotherthing.com Katie Reed

You are adorable and beautiful and rock everything you wear. :) I <3 your suit and you!

  • Carly Anderson

I think you look gorgeous in your swimsuit! The polka dots are super cute! Everyone should feel comfortable in the skin they’re in – we only get one body!

  • http://www.cosmosmariners.com/ Natalie V.

I think you look great! :) That is such a cute swimsuit, and it looks really nice on you. I’m of the same mindset as you: I’m never, ever going to be a swimsuit model (nor do I want to be), and my husband loves me as I am, so why shouldn’t I have a good time at the beach!? 😀 I’ll be rocking my suit at the pool, beach, and water park all summer and having a blast with my toddler!

This is great, and so true! You look great!

Honey Cocktail Recipes for Sweet Summer Drinks

Sponsored post in collaboration with The Motherhood and The Honey Board.  There is nothing we love more for an extra bit of sweetness in our home than honey. I stir it into my coffee, add some over my plain low-fat yogurt, on toast with peanut butter and it replaces syrup on my pancakes — and now in my kids water and in my summertime drinks! This honey cocktail recipe that I appropriately named “Viva el Verano” which translates to “Long Live Summer” {Read More}
