It’s never EVER easy to get back into working out after an extended ‘leave of absence.’
As mamas we are busy, yes, but depending on the age of our children, our “busy” can vary. For instance, a new mom has a variety of challenges and fills her days differently than a mother with school age kids. You get it.
So when it comes to working out, getting in shape and feeling good the same applies. Fitness classes are NOT a one size fits all, even if they are “mom” friendly — that was the topic of my segment on Let’s Talk Live this week.
As a lead in to the segment, I brought up my own struggle with depression and anxiety and my new way of viewing personal health and fitness when host Kelley Lynn asked “Why is it important for moms to be fit?” I wanted you, the viewer to see that it goes beyond trying to get back into your jeans (which we ALL want!) because I’ve experienced the effects of horrible self-care and it’s no laughing matter.
Below are the classes and stylish gear I featured and a few extra for you to consider because there is something for everyone!
Fitness Classes for Every Stage of Motherhood
Old Town, Alexandria
Ideal for moms of school age children or grown children.
Personal training, semi-private affordable classes and bootcamp. Core strength, no machines and one on one tailored training. It’s a Very Busy Mamá favorite! See video of my personal experience here.
Del Ray, Alexandria and Clarendon
Ideal for first time moms with babies up to 9 months.
Mommy and Me Barre Class (with baby in a carrier). Core strength and a mix of Pilates and yoga with added cardio. The Arlington studio has childcare if doing other classes. Always check site for details regarding weight and age before registration.
If you are looking for a fitness challenge, join me and the very busy familia on this 5K walk/run and family fun festival taking place in Alexandria on September 21st. Yon’t be banished to the back of the pack, you’ll BE the pack.
For moms with children from birth to 4 years.
Outdoor stroller cardio workout with your child, up to 4 years old (average). For safety children must stay in stroller entire length of session. Lead by certified trainers (all moms!) Be prepared to work hard, have fun and meet other like minded mamas. Brooke Harris, who modeled on the show is an instructor in Alexandria.
Del Ray, Alexandria
Moms with infants not yet crawling.
Studio offering yoga, barre and Pilates, they have a Mommy and Me Yoga and Pilates class. Even better is that it is taught by friend and fellow mama Natalie Berkeley — who by the way can do a head stand on a surf board. Yeah.
Moms who want to workout at home.
25 minutes a day for 10 weeks, this workout is part of the Beachbody family. High intensity cardio and strength, not for first time fitness goers. Clear out the playroom, pop in the DVD, focus and GO! Take it from me, this workout is no joke, but extremely effective and you will see results in a week. See my top 10 reasons T25 is great for moms.
Ashburn, Fairfax, Chantilly, Vienna
Moms with children up to 4 years.
Several classes offered but their signature class is an hour long workout that is fun for the whole family. “Bring your baby or toddler: no childcare required! Each class includes cardio drills, strength training, and core work.” All fitness levels welcome. Always have both high and low intensity modifications. Classes are offered throughout the week and weekend at all of our locations.
