I received a gift card to shop the Renovation Sale. All items selected and styled by me!
For those of you in the Washington, D.C. area, you know how much we value our small businesses. Here in Alexandria I am spoiled for choice with boutiques, cafés, fitness facilities — all owned and operated by locals.
Having grown up in a mall (most of us did, that’s how it was) “shopping small” wasn’t even on the radar. In fact, I wouldn’t know what that was. I’d hear the word boutique and think “way too expensive” or “not cool enough.”
Yes, boutiques tend to be higher priced, however, for every $100 spent in a local shop, $68 stays in the community.
I do make a conscious effort to shop locally and support business owners when I can. Sure, it may be during a sale or a few small ticket items, but I do it — and along the way I’ve made friends and gotten to know the ins and outs of having a small business.
Right now through January 24, Kiskadee Boutique in Del Ray is having a Renovation Sale. They are re-doing the shop and have items on sale from 50%-80% off. Not only is a great opportunity to pick up one of a kind pieces, but also to get into the habit of popping into local boutiques to see what they offer, get to know the owners and make a genuine connection with those running a business literally just down the street from you.
Yes, that’s right, I said: get into the habit. Shopping small takes time and practice. I had to learn to shop small, to appreciate whats being offered and the dedication that goes into these shops. I get it now.
That doesn’t mean Target and other chain stores are gone for good, but I leave room in my budget for something special from that mom owned boutique down the way, or that coffee shop owned by the young couple on my way to my son’s school.
At Kiskadee, I made sure to keep my head on straight and not get carried away.
I ended up with a pair of Lucky Brand booties, Joie d’orsay flats (perfect for my trip to LA next month!) and a…get this…a black puffer jacket! I’m anti-puffer jackets, but this one wasn’t as puffy and didn’t make me look like the Michelin man. Just another opportunity to add quality items to my wardrobe one sale at a time!
Kiskadee is located at 2205 Mount Vernon Avenue in Del Ray, Alexandria — and remember to ask for Sarah!
