Dove Beauty Stories is a sponsored campaign with Dove and The Motherhood and this is MY story because every woman in beautiful!
“Si un chico no ve que tu eres linda, ¡es un tonto!” exclaimed my Oma wiping away my tears after being rejected and made fun of by a boy.
At the age of 10 my family and I lived with my Opas — grandparents — in Concepción, Chile and my grandmother became for me a pillar of faith, true beauty, personal style and most importantly self confidence.
My Oma is the only woman, other than my mother, that I studied with supreme attention throughout my life.
“La belleza” — beauty — “lo llevas por dentro y se demuestra en tu sentido del humor, la riza, una sonrisa, una linda mirada, en tu tono de voz, en la forma en que amas y más…” Beauty is shown through our sense of humor, our laughter, our smile, a loving look, in the tone of our voice and in the way we love.”
Everything from the way she lovingly looked at my Opa, to the way she put on red lipstick, the way she undid her short curls and hair sprayed them put, the heels she wore every day even if going to the market, and especially seeing her work around the home and then “darse una manito de gato” (quick touch up) before heading out the door. If only to go to the grocery store or running an errand.
My Oma is of a different era, but true beauty, intelligence and class don’t ever go out of style.
She taught me that God made all women beautiful and that it was up to each one of us to uncover and learn to use our beauty for good both inside and out. “La belleza” — beauty — “lo llevas por dentro y se demuestra en tu sentido del humor, la riza, una sonrisa, una linda mirada, en tu tono de voz, en la forma en que amas y más…” Beauty is shown through our sense of humor, our laughter, our smile, a loving look, in the tone of our voice and in the way we love.
“Lo demás” — the rest — the makeup, perfume the beautiful dresses, the fancy shoes, and personal style are just the gift wrap ready to be opened to bring the joy and happiness beauty has to offer.
Of course being a moody teenager with a serious eye rolling problem and not being asked out didn’t exactly make me believe this — but after years of seeing her lead by example I realized it had all sunk in. Her persistence DID instill a sense of self-worth, positive self-esteem and self confidence that I only now realize have had since childhood.
“Lo demás” — the rest — the makeup, perfume the beautiful dresses, the fancy shoes, and personal style are just the gift wrap ready to be opened to bring the joy and happiness our beauty has to offer.”
“Si no te quieres a ti misma, pierdes tu belleza. Quiérete y los demás también lo verán” Once you love yourself, everyone will see it and there is nothing you can’t do. If you don’t love yourself, you lose your natural beauty.
Beauty habits and advice are often passed down from generation to generation, and so much of what I learned about beauty is thanks to my Oma. A Dove survey recently found that most women trust the women in their lives even more than celebrities for beauty tips and advice. Knowing the influence my Oma had on me, I definitely believe this to be true.
Check out the new Dove Beauty Stories: Four Generations film that shows the beautiful influence us women have on each other and share your own #BeautyStory to celebrate the real women who inspire it.
