I constantly struggle to find babysitters to cover the 5:00 – 7:30pm hours during the week and I have found myself passing up on on work events or simply an evening out with a friend because the thought of calling and emailing around to get coverage during that time is not worth all of the trouble.
It’s an odd time, but my husband does not get home until 7:30/8:00pm and to be out and back early enough I need to leave by 5:00pm. Besides, I live in the Washington, D.C. area — traffic is ranked the worst in the nation, right up there with Los Angeles.
A few weeks ago I needed a babysitter, ASAP after the person I had lined up cancelled last minute. I was participating in an event I had RSVP’d to months ago and I could not and would not cancel. Why should I?
Wednesday I went on Urban Sitter to see who I could find. They had given me a $50 credit and a one month free membership. I searched by zip code to narrow it down — I realized then that each registered sitter had a description of their services and also if they had a background check. Facebook also helped with peace of mind — if you connected your account you could see if you had any friends in common.
Just like that, one of the babysitters, Paige, and I had a (good) friend of mine in common which made me choose her instantly. She was a college student studying education and was close by. I’ve babysat since I was 13 so I know how it is and if you are in college and willing to babysit, it means you like kids. Trust me, otherwise you’d do something else.
The process was simple and straight forward, I messaged her and despite the very last minute request for Friday evening, she was available. We messaged back and forth a few times and BOOM — sitter was booked!
With just a few clicks I was able to keep to my commitment and find a sitter last minute without stressing out. And when the evening was over, I paid with my card.
Yep, after she left, I received a message to confirm the hours, hit pay and it was all done. Honestly, very simple and best of all hassle free.
Here are a few recommendations for those thinking about using Urban Sitter:
— If you have a big event such as a birthday party, big family summer BBQ or are hosting a dinner at your home, Urban Sitter is ideal to get one or more babysitters to help you out to keep the children entertained while the adults enjoy.
— Last minute anything! Things come up, life happens and family and friends are not always around at the drop of a hat, but one of the gals on Urban Sitter may be.
— If your schedule varies and you know your requests will be spur of the moment.
— We often plan days out with other friends/couples and instead of each getting a sitter, hire 2 or 3 and have all kids stay in one place and split the costs.
— Need an extra set of hands? (DUH, we all do) Call on a sitter to help you with the kids during a day out or even while you prep your home for guests, etc.
Oh and my sitter? Paige, she was great — the kids loved her and my son is asking when she will be back again.
Don’t you worry mis niños — mami is already planning!
