My labor had to be induced last minute due to my struggle with high blood pressure and in the end, preeclampsia. For her safety and mine, it was best to bring her into this world a bit early at 37 weeks — my daughter, Elisa María was born small but strong and healthy on the morning of July 2nd.
Leading up to the day of her birth I’d been feeling off and I’d been in hospital for overnight monitoring and given mild bed rest (laughable, I know!)
Post in partnership with LUVS and SocialStars. Newborn baby and tales of motherhood are my own!
The fact is, I was feeling terrible and the burden of going to hospital every other day for hours on end was taking its toll on me. Not only physically and mentally, but trying to find childcare for the other two was causing me tons of anxiety — financially and the actual act of calling around and getting someone to help me out last minute.
However, this summer has been a whirlwind of changes. My mother leaves for Chile to visit my Oma (her mother) for 6 weeks since she is not well. My brother has a newborn of his own and is remodeling his home and my sister, well, she married an Aussie and left for Oz just two days after Elisa was born.
So that just leaves my husband and I to get creative on the childcare front and call on friends and babysitters to help out. In the meantime, my kids are old enough to do small chores and help out.
My 7 year old and 3 year old have been a tremendous help so far — they make their own lunch, pitch in with easy chores and of course they are diaper changing experts already and they never let me forget our diaper bag when going out.
Thankfully Luvs has great leak guard and night time added protection. So despite poopy diapers, none of it has come out on me, the bed or her bassinet.
I always trust friends on recommendations and referrals and because they are a bit older, feel secure enough that they will let me know if someone is not right. If that doesn’t come through, I have an account with Urban Sitter that I can use to source local help as I need it.
There is a lot going on in our lives right now and I want to be as calm as possible without adding extra drama. It’s a summer to remember, that’s for sure and we will all make it out alive!
